Backend Engineer Intern (AI & Algorithm Research)

About the Role

At Minerva Next, we’re revolutionizing learning in the AI era with our platform. Unlike traditional study apps, we use adaptive algorithms to deliver dynamic and multi-mode experiences that strengthen memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving in a world of instant AI answers. As a Backend Engineer Intern (AI & Algorithm Research), you'll build scalable backend systems and implement innovative AI-driven algorithms that power intuitive, personalized learning experiences, blending hands-on development with targeted research to push the boundaries of education.

Important: This is a paid internship (6-12 months) for students currently enrolled in a Canadian educational institution.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and optimize backend systems using .NET, PostgreSQL, and Entity Framework.
  • Implement high-quality, testable algorithms (e.g., for spaced repetition or user style diagnostics) with best practices like unit testing, modular design, and peer reviews to ensure robust, scalable performance.
  • Research and prototype AI-driven features for adaptive learning paths, translating findings into production-ready code.
  • Collaborate with the team of talented engineers to ship features to build a world-class AI-driven learning platform.
  • Experiment with innovative backend solutions, such as optimizing database queries for real-time analytics or exploring AI model integrations to enhance platform's cognitive training capabilities.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Canadian educational institution.
  • Ph.D., Master's, or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of software development experience (academic, personal, or open-source projects).
  • Strong proficiency in algorithm design, AI model integration, or research in adaptive learning systems.
  • Experience with .NET, PostgreSQL, and Entity Framework; familiarity with RESTful APIs and backend architecture.
  • Passion for high-quality code: experience with testing frameworks and clean, modular design patterns.
  • AI-savvy: curious about and heavy users of AI technologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with a collaborative, no-ego mindset.

What We Offer

  • Paid internship with flexible hours to balance your studies.
  • Ship production-ready code that powers our AI-driven learning platform on iOS, Android, and web platforms.
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers, with guidance on AI ethics, algorithm optimization, and career growth in a mission-driven startup.
  • Hands-on experience building a platform where your work drives data-proven outcomes, like improved user retention and learning efficiency.
  • Access to Minerva Next's full suite of AI-powered study tools to fuel your own growth as a learner and thinker.
  • A diverse, inclusive culture that welcomes all backgrounds and encourages bold experimentation in a remote, Canada-based setting.
